For more thoughts about Acoustic Ecology, Soundwalks, soundscapes and speculative biomes, check out the [[EcoSystemic Sound Lab]] project. The [Biophilic Simulacra](EcoSystemic%20Sound%20Lab.md#Speculative%20Biomes) [n] series are speculative soundscape creations. Each instance is discussed below. ## Biophilic Simulacra \[31Jan2026]
allisonic · Biophilic Simulacra [ 31Jan2026 ]
This soundscape stems from a collaboration with the New York Botanical Garden and their [Welikia Project](https://www.welikia.org/) which aims to illuminate the rich ecological history that underwrites the development of New York City – documenting how the ecosystems have evolved up to the present. We are now attempting to imagine a similar time lapse through sound. By creating models of flora and fauna, behaviors, and environmental actors, we use the Welikia data to re-create soundscapes that may have existed in the past. This instance of Biophilic Simulacra is a proof of concept mixing site recordings with re-constructed situations and environments. To make an engaging composition there are a few reveals of the process mixed in for good measure. Listen for place, movement, what is static and what is changing. It's always remarkable to me that you can listen to a recording and intuit what time it is. A good recording is like a time capsule – this capsule, of speculative time and place.
