The field of Artificial Intelligence has been around for a very long time. As soon as I began combining computers and music in 2000 there was an aura there that draws you into making projects. At that point in time is was various types of autonomous systems, decision trees, markov chains, and even various types of machine learning, and neural networks.
One of these earlier works is [Diamonds in Dystopia](Diamonds%20in%20Dystopia.md) which used the transcripts of TED talks to collaboratively and generatively create a poem as performance.
In 2016 with the interest of one of our EMDM grad students Andrew Pfalz, we started to explore the new approaches to generative AI like ChaRNN for text, and Deep Dream for images. Of course we were using it to experiment with generating audio. These early experiments have deeply informed my interest in what could be possible, and lack of interest in what companies are currently attempting to do.
