Tesla Inventions (2025)
for tiny Tesla coil and computer
Among Nikola Tesla's storied inventions, the Tesla coil came to light in an 1890 demonstration at his lab in New York. Over 100 years later, the 2007 edition of SXSW witnessed Joe DiPrima and Oliver Greaves controlling the sparks with audio waves and performing musical lightning to spectacular effect.
Following in the footsteps of the creators of the coil, the Zeusaphone, Thor-amin, this series of performance experiments makes use of a smaller, less spectacular form of musical lightning – a tiny Tesla coil. A series of experiments have been conducted in an attempt to engage with the coil on its own "musical" terms – a crackling, ionizing, mess of electricity – teasing out what it might define as music instead of bending it to play our own.
Each performance of the work consists of a carefully selected set of experiments and is collectively known as an Invention. Invention no. 1 materialized on January 25, 2025 at Louisiana State University.
